Patients who have lost the capacity to move will soon be able to communicate in a very unusual way – with their eyes…
Scientists have recently developed a new technology which transforms the movements of the pupil into words which are then printed on screen. Although our eyes are always on the move and it is almost impossible to control their movement, a research team led by Jean Lorenceau from Pierre et Marie Curie University in Paris, found a way how to effectively “trick” the eye muscles into producing continuous movements, the Daily Mail reports.
“Contrary to our beliefs, it is possible to ‘dominate over’ eye movements. We have created a device that helps us in doing this; it is something like a pencil for your eyes,” said Lorenceau.
Scientists claim that it would only take a few half-hour training sessions for volunteers to be able to write 20-30 words per minute, which is very similar to the classic hand-writing. For people who can not move their limbs, this technology could be a turning point in communication with society. Also, researchers believe that it can also help people with disabilities such as dyslexia or ADHD.
