APHAKIA AND PSEUDOAPHAKIA

Aphakia is a lack of the lens.

Causes:

Most commonly it is a consequence of surgical removal of the cataract- Rarely it can be caused by a perforative eye injury.

Symptoms:

It is recognized by a very black color of the pupils, a very deep anterior chamber (seems like the iris is away from the cornea), and fine fluttering of the iris (occurs because the iris has lost support that the lens normally gives it, the lens itself has no strength – it is actually a very thin and delicate membrane).

PSEUDOAPHAKIA

It is a condition after an eye surgery where the eye lens is replaced by an artificial intraocular lens of plastic material. The lens is implanted in the back or, less frequently, in the front eye chamber. Anterior eye chamber is very deep and the reflection of plastic can be seen in the pupil, much stronger and livelier than with the natural lens of the eye.
