CELLULITIS

CELLULITIS (INFLAMMATION OF THE ORBIT)

Results of the direct orbit infection are cellulitis, creation of orbital abscess, phlegmonosus inflammation of orbital fat tissue with gradual development of endophlebitis and periphlebitis.

CELLULITIS

Causes:

Inflammations of the orbit may occur due to: the spread of infection from the paranasal sinuses, teeth, lachrymal bags, nose, ears …; direct orbital infection after penetrating injuries.

Specific orbital inflammation may be caused by tuberculosis, syphilis, parasitic or fungal infections.

Symptoms:

General: fever, nausea.

If the infection transfers to the eyeball it causes uveitis, vitreous body opacification, endophthalmitis, panophtalmitis.

On the clinical picture are visible exophthalmos, eyelid edema, chemosis of the conjunctiva, keratitis, and reduced mobility of the eye.

Division of the acute inflammation:

orbital cellulitis with an abscess, which affects connective and fatty tissue

orbital vein thrombophlebitis

osteoperiositis

tenonitis (myositis)

Treatment:

Removing the cause of inflammation, especially if there is orbital osteomyelitis, which leads to the development of nonspecific granuloma of the orbit, called pseudotumor.

Infection of the cranial part is life-threatening; meningitis may occur, as well as encephalitis, cavernous sinus thrombosis, cerebral abscess.
