College students have been known to binge drink to excess. While binge drinking has serious risks, permanent loss of eyesight is not one of them. The same can not be said for a “new” method of drinking, vodka eyeballing, which actually puts the person’s vision at permanent risk…
Vodka eyeballing is the practice of “drinking” by pouring a shot of vodka into your eye. Those who do it claim that it induces feelings of drunkenness at break-neck speeds, providing an instant high.
Vodka eyeballing is believed to have emerged in the U.S. as a popular nightclub trick performed by waitresses for tips in resorts such as Las Vegas.
There is a Facebook fan page which describes itself as:
A group dedicated to those of us that feel no need to raise the Vodka Bottle to our mouth but to “Up The Ante” and raise it a little higher to the eye… It’s such a beautiful sight seeing the rim of the bottle connect with your eye and then the pure Vodka flooding the eyeball. Become part of this great cause and run riot around you local town/shopping center/school!
The vodka poured into the eyeball may well leave the eye with decreased sight. Vodka is 40% pure ethanol. It is caustic when poured into the eye, burning, creating inflammation and scarring of the cornea and sclera.
The inflammation and scarring created by the vodka eyeballing can leave permanent pain and decreased vision.
