How can cheap sunglasses destroy your eyesight?

While many are subject to fickle fashion trends and buy new sunglasses every season, they have no idea how dangerous it can be for them. We discover the risks of wearing low-quality glasses, as well as tips on what to look out for when buying your new favorite fashion accessory …

Sunglasses are a favorite summer fashion accessory. In order to be able to have a multitude of different models that they will be able to combine with absolutely any outfit, many trendsetters prefer to choose the cheaper variants. That is why their main task, to protect the eyes from the sun’s rays, has become an incidental detail while design is a crucial factor in selection. But, as experts claim, such thinking could be dangerous to your health!

A recent study conducted in the UK found that more than three quarters of cheap sunglasses do not provide sufficient UV protection. Namely, ultraviolet rays, the same ones that cause burns and skin cancer, are invisible to the human eye, and too much exposure to them can cause a number of harmful effects on your eyesight.

At first glance, it may seem that cheap sunglasses are a great investment for the summer but the cheap plastic we look through distorts the field of vision and strains the eyes which ultimately damages vision and causes headaches.

However, it is important to emphasize that even a high price is not a guarantee of quality.

Therefore, when buying sunglasses, pay attention to the following:

  • Quality glasses must have a label on the percentage and type of UV radiation they block.
  • You can check the quality of the lens on the glasses with a simple test. After putting on the glasses, cover one eye with your hand. Find a straight line to look at and slowly move your head up and down and left and right. If the lens is of good quality, the line you are looking at will remain straight, while otherwise it will appear slightly distorted.
