Pregnancy and Eyes

During pregnancy eyes go through certain changes. The existing refractive errors may increase, and dry eye syndrome can occur…

These changes occur due to fluid retention, high blood pressure, hormonal changes and other physical changes that are part of pregnancy. The changes are usually temporary and easily disappear after the baby is born or when a mother stops breastfeeding.

As far as the eye refractive error (diopter) is concerned, the changes are usually minor and does not require a new prescription for glasses. During pregnancy and lactation, a pregnant woman should definitely avoid refractive surgery with LASIK.

What should you pay attention to?

A condition known as “dry eye” may be due to hormonal changes during pregnancy. If you notice symptoms of dry eyes, consult your doctor about the drops and ointments that do not have a detrimental effect on pregnancy.

Wearing contact lenses during pregnancy can also be difficult because of dry eye. Eating foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids, such as salmon, flax seeds and nuts may help resolve dry eye, and also promote overall health.

If there is a sudden blurring of vision, it may indicate high blood pressure or diabetes associated with pregnancy. In this case, contact your doctor as soon as possible.
