Half of UK adults have never heard of AMD, according to the results of a survey released by the College of Optometrists last week…
The survey took a sample of over 4,000 adults and asked if they had heard of the condition, which is set to increase in the UK by a quarter by 2020 – claims research published in the British Journal of Ophthalmology.
Optometric adviser to the College, Dr Susan Blakeney said: “AMD is the biggest single cause of sight loss in the UK so it is concerning that so few people have heard of it and its symptoms. By making people more aware of AMD and the impact it can have we hope to increase detection and people seeking access to support services.”
The results of the study attracted media coverage around the country by local press, and featured on the BBC and Daily Mail websites. Regional radio and television stations also covered the story.
