Not only have they become an essential accessory and are worn by many through all seasons,sunglasses are crucial for eye health because they protect against harmful sun rays.
What sun does to eyes
Eyelids
The skin on the eyes , especially on the eyelids, is very thin. If you are constantly exposed to the sun , it will eventually cause skin aging and fine lines. More importantly, it is possible to get skin cancer.
Sclera
Exposure to sunlight can cause the development of pinguecula or damage to the thin membrane that covers that part of the eye . Therefore, the sclera can get yellowish specks , and the tissue can be inflammated and irritative.
Iris
An ophthalmologist at the Mayo Clinic, William Brown , said for the Huffington Post that people with blue eyes more easily develop macular degeneration, which is associated with the weakening and loss of vision. Although there is no proven link, experts strongly recommends that people with bright eyes must wear glasses in the sun.
Eye lens
It is a transparent structure in the eye, that alongside cornea allows light rays to focus on the retina. Damage to the lens can lead to blurred vision, i.e. cataract, that can be removed surgically.
Don’t remember when buying sunglasses:
- Make sure the glasses have UVA and UVB protection.
- If it says that the glass is polarized, that does not mean they have the necessary protection.
- You do not have to choose glasses with the darkest lenses to protect your eyes. Other colors such as brown, green , yellow and pink glass are equally good.
- Large frames are not just a trendy selection; they protect your eyes more than small glasses.
- The gray – brown or gray- green lenses provide better protection from glare, but color of the lens does not affect the percentage of blocked UV rays.
