Method of exercise on a “pull-pull” principle could be especially important for those who depend on the depth perception because of their workplace – such as dentists, surgeons, machinery controls or athletes. Experts point out that this method could be adapted for children with amblyopia – the appearance of impaired eye sight.
The technique consists of exercises in which the weaker eye works harder, while the stronger one is inhibited from exercise.
“After a ten-day training period, we found that the sensory dominance of the eye significantly reduced in our patients, and both eyes became balanced. As a result, their depth perception has also improved significantly,” explained Teng Leng Ooi from the University of Optometry in Pennsylvania.
Authors of the study point out that they are not entirely sure how their method returns the balance of the eyes, but they believe it is because the stronger eye is inhibited while the weaker eye is forced to exercise. In this way they can reduce the inhibitory effect of the stronger eye over the weaker.
The study was published in the journal Current Biology.
