TOXOPLASMOSIS

TOXOPLASMOSIS

It is the inflammation of the retina caused by the protozoan Toxoplasma gondii.

TOXOPLASMOSIS

Types:

It can be congenital or acquired. Congenital toxoplasmosis is characterized by three Ks: calcifications in the brain, convulsions, and chorioretinitis. When it comes to congenital toxoplasmosis the pregnant women, infected by contact with cat or eating raw meat, transfers the infection to the fetus.

Causes:

Ocular toxoplasmosis in children and adults is usually caused by reactivation of toxoplasmosis cysts imported with congenital infection. In the acute stage develops chorioretinitis, or better retinochorioditis: not sharply limited yellow-whitish focuses followed by blurres vitreous body. Focuses heal on the characteristic scar areas of chorioretinal pigmentation or depigmentation. Macular focuses heavily damage the vision, while the peripheral ones may be asymptomatic.

Symptoms:

Not sharply limited yellow-whitish focuses, blurred vitreous body.

Treatment:

Toxoplasmosis is diagnosed by serology tests (titer of serum antitoksoplasmosis-antibody ELISA).

Topical steroids and mydriatics. The systemic pirimetamin, sulfadiazine, clindamycin, in severe cases, steroids.
