British teenager nearly died from an allergic reaction to eye drops…
Just a few hours after the first use of the medication she got blisters, her skin was peeling off, and her eyes were full of blood.
Nineteen-year-old Marian Adejokun from a small place Croydon in Britain got blisters from head to toe and lost layers of skin after a small amount of eye drops, Optrex. She spent more than three weeks at the intensive care unit, and at first puzzled doctors finally diagnosed her with a life-threatening Stevens-Johnson syndrome. She is still receiving food through a tube in her neck.
“After a couple of hours, I was swollen everywhere. My nose was huge, and eyes completely red, full of blood, “said Marian, describing her reaction to the drops Optrex, which she got on prescription in mid-January because they complained of itchy eyes.
Stevens-Johnson syndrome (SJS) is a dangerous reaction to medications. It was called after the two American pediatricians who described the disease in 1922. It occurs in two persons in a million, more often in women. If left untreated it could lead to death, and possible complications are blindness and lung damage.
