This woman can see 99 million more colors than other people…
Although she cannot see through walls or, like Superman, fire laser beams from her eyes, a women in this story has a very unusual ability. According to the Discover Magazine, she can see over 99 million colors compared to the average man.
Eyesight is one of the most complicated of human senses; the way we see colors is determined by the retina which comprises two kinds of receptors for light – rods and cones. Most people have three types of cones, so they are called threechromats. Those who are color blind have only two types of cones and are called dichromats. But a scientist from the Institute of Neuroscience, Dr. Gabriele Jordan, has spent the last twenty years of her life searching tetrachromats – those with four types of cones, and the ability to see 100 million colors. Although, along with her team, she has managed to find several tetrachromats, only one of them managed to pass her test.
The patient, known only as “subject cDa29,” is a doctor from northern England, but Jordan is hoping that she will, after this case, find a few more.
“We know that tetrachromats are there, but what you do not know is what allows someone to become a tetrachromat. It is interesting that the majority of women with four cones are not tetrachromats,” said Jordan.
