Blepharitis marginalis ciliaris (inflammation of the edge of eyelid) is a disease of the edge of eyelid caused by bacterial infection of eyelash secretory canals, and it can be a consequence of uncorrected refractive anomaly, allergy and chronic stimulation. It can be lupus erythematosus, squamous and ulcerative.
Symptoms:
Edges of eyelids are red, sometimes swollen, covered with flakes and crusts.
Causes:
The causes are bacterial infection, seborrhea, rosacea, allergy, chronic irritation, chronic rhinitis and sinusitis.
Staphylococcal blepharitis (picture) is characterized by tiny rhagas in the inner or external angle, similar to angulus infectiosus on lips – only without the redness – and edema of eyelids.
Treatment:
Remove the cause. The hygiene of eyelids is very important: with cotton stick dipped into water crusts from the edges of eyelids should be removed and smudged with antibiotic ointment on daily basis. For staphylococcal blepharitis – antibiotic ointment.
Consequences of blepharitis are loss of eyelashes, trichiasis (irregular growth of eyelashes).
