Parasitic nematode worms are a source of many diseases and health issues. The most common ones in our area are the so-called threadworms, which usually occur in children…
But, the African continent knows some dramatically worse forms of infection from worms. The larvae, which are transmitted by horse flies, often infect people during the rainy season in West and Central Africa. When the larvae mature into adult roundworms they can move from the bloodstream into the eye.
Since the worms usually affect people in rural areas, the treatment can be problematic. There are only two known medications, one of which kills the adult worms, while the other kills the larvae as well but comes with the risk of brain inflammation.
When it comes to worms that can be seen under the skin or in the eye, the easiest way of treatment is surgery. The patient gets a local anesthetic, a surgeon cuts the affected area and pulls the worm out while the patient is still conscious.
