An exhibition on the blind in sports, called “Preskočimo granice” (Crossing the borders) is opened in Typhlological museum in Zagreb….
It is through the success of athletes with disabilities that society was introduced to the achievements of which were thought to be impossible.
The practice of sport is important for everyone, especially for people with disabilities who find multiple benefits in doing sports. Persons with disabilities who played sports have gradually, but very successfully changed the perception of society towards disability, while they were changing the attitude towards their own limitations.
Ever since the eighties of the 20th century a broad global movement has been developing, within which more and more people with disabilities are being included recreationally and competitively in different disciplines of sport. In addition to traditional sports like chess, athletics and bowling, people with disabilities and their organizations create rules, props and categories for a range of new disciplines and competitions modeled on sports and events for people without disabilities.
Selected items from the Typhlological Museum’s collection presented on this exhibition stand as proof of a long and rich tradition of sporting activities for blind people in Zagreb, Croatia. The author of the exhibition concept is Nevenka Ćosić, and as an integral part of the exhibition a film by Dejan Aćimović will be shown, „Hrabro i na rezultat” , a documentary about a blind Paralympics’ athlet Peter Bešlić, a competitor at the POI in Beijing.
