“Od negda za svagda” is a cookbook for the blind and visually impaired by an author Ivan Ivković, which contains 130 recipes recorded on a CD…
The first Croatian cookbook with sound contains recipes from all over Croatia, and even includes clarification of some of the culinary terms and techniques. What makes this book so special is that it is the first sound cookbook for the blind and visually impaired in our country, said the author Ivan Ivković. Around 500 CDs with recordings of 130 recipes have already been issued for the blind and visually impaired. Ivković intends to go a step further and publish a book with recipes which will contain an audio CD so that the customers get the feeling of the problem of the blind and visually impaired, and that they have a chance to give that CD to someone who needs it.
The realization of the project was actually a coincidence. Ivković is a professional chef, who has been hosting a culinary show „Let’s Cook Together” on Croatian Catholic Radio for eight years now. The show, he says, occurred at a time when people mostly talked about complicated recipes from faraway world. He decided on a different concept – the propagation of the old Croatian native cuisine. The first recipe on the menu of the radio show was „greblica”from Samobor. More than 420 recipes were presented through the show, and only here and there a recipe was repeated at the request of listeners, as for example the one for “štrukle”. Making all of this into a cookbook with sound was an idea of Mirko Hrkač, director and founder of the foundation, “I hear, I believe, I see,” which deals with sound recordings and digitization of printed books. Hrkač suggested to make a cookbook and to enable the blind and visually impaired to have access to old recipes. Ivković was thrilled with the idea and has selected and adapted recipes for the blind and visually impaired. Those working on the book worked without fees, City of Zagreb has given some funds and the publisher was the already mentioned foundation.
The first cookbook with sound contains recipes from all over Croatia. In addition to recipes, Ivković explains some of the concepts and techniques of cooking. He is convinced that the promotion of authentic Croatian dishes should be the base of our tourist offer. Also, the preface of the cookbook emphasizes the need that the kitchen in Croatian homes be a place where the family will spend time, eat, cry, and laugh, just like in the old times.
– We have good food, we have quality recipes. That’s it, says Ivković.
The first cookbook with sound, says Ivković, was very well received. The second one is being proofread.
