His job boiled down to giving kickbacks to doctors and scientists to make research results turned out positive for the drug companies…
Narco-bosses on the street have dealers, and pharmacists have doctors. John Virapen is in no doubt while stating such accusations. He repeated them a million times and does not intend to stop. He is trying to warn the public of the dangers which they are daily exposed to by huge pharmaceutical companies who are advertising numerous tablets which are then used by thousands of people. In addition, John Virapen wants to soothe his qualms. He is tortured by the fact that he spend full 35 years as an operations officer working in the pharmaceutical industry, first as a traveling salesman, and when he showed a talent for convincing people to buy drugs, they promote him to a manager whose job was to train an army of people to imitate him in the field. His business always boiled down to bribing doctors to offer patients their pills and adapt them to these pills, and to bribe scientists to give the results of testing of new products, regardless of the brutal side effects, in compliance with the wishes of his bosses. In summary, he ensured that the remedy gets the green light from those in charge to be on the shelves, and when it is already there to be sold in large numbers. What is the purpose of the drug, is it useful and could it cause some side effects, not only in adults but also for small children, in the elite world of pharmaceutical industry, he claims, is absolutely irrelevant.
One of his greatest sins is called Prozac. I guess there is no person who has not heard of these cult anti-depressants, so cleverly advertised to have even a dose of mystical attraction. John made sure that the remedy is spread to the Swedish market. Prozac was originally supposed to be registered as a pill for weight loss, but they were hampered in that plan by too complicated procedures (additional study), so they asked for approval that the same agent, fluoxetine, be pronounced a remedy for calming down. However, the tests were not helping them. Suicide appeared to be a side effect of these pills, the majority has tested them didn’t took it well; of 11 000 that were listed as respondents only 286 Prozac users were actually examined, many of which withdrew because of side effects. A psychiatrist from the medical committee felt that the maximum dose should be 5 mg, and one of the largest pharmaceutical companies in the world – Eli Lilly & Company, where Virapen long served as CEO of Swedish subsidiary – was seeking approval for 20 mg. Virapen managed to find a psychiatrist Anders Forsman, whose identity according to the procedure had to be a secret, who was supposed to prepare the results so that the regulatory body could decide whether to approve the drug or not. When he first met him in 1988, Forsman made fun of Prozac. Next time they met he took $ 20 000 to approve it. Not only that it was approved, but John helped “press” the data so that suicide attempts in the tests fell into the category of “no effect” and were never mentioned again. Not even on the instructions for the drug in the U.S., where a billion dollars a year is earned on selling Prozac. The pill is approved in Germany, although only one year before the federal Office of Public Health found that fluoxetine is not suitable for depression, on the contrary, it even induces it and that there is no evidence for efficacy and safety. IN 2006, the European Medicines Agency in turn recommended the use of fluoxetine in children with the instruction: “Parents and physicians should carefully monitor children who are treated with the medicine and watch for suicidal intent.” (!)
John Virapen, now an international business consultant, says that for pharmacists depression is a fertile ground because the definition of the disease is not clear, and with a little creativity every person can be depressed (it’s weird if you change the mood, and even weirder if you don’t change it). To Croats who swallow pills to calm in huge amounts, Virapen says: All antidepressants are rubbish! It has been proven that they are not effective, but dangerous. Throw them away, play sports and eat healthy. A key argument, he adds, that at the root cuts the effectiveness of antidepressants, is “serotonin scam”. Some American scientists who have studied the theory of serotonin have concluded that neuroscience research has not found any link between serotonin levels and psychiatric disorders, and even that there is no scientifically proven ideal chemical balance of serotonin, let alone a pathological imbalance of serotonin.
All of the above Virapen presented in his, book “Side Effects: Death – Confession of a Pharma-Insider”, that was promoted this week in Zagreb. In the book, he also lists the other drugs that he believes should never have seen the light of day like Zyprex for schizophrenia, he writes about the fraud of human insulin, and most of the space is devoted to children.
Virapen argues that the pharmacists in recent years have assailed on the youngest. American psychiatrists, in accordance with the mantra “Let’s expand the market – see how many children are there “, invented, he said, ADHD – hyperactivity disorder for which no one has heard before, and today is spread among the youngest like cold. This is cynically speaks in the book: “So, your children do not work precisely as a Swiss watch? You should really be concerned about that. Buy a pill to adjust. Even you can do that. Fortunately, Lilly conducted a study on the tablet that will make your kids bingo kids. “
Today, pharmacists come to American schools and promise children cinema tickets if they persuade their parents to participate in the questionnaire. Some of the questions for children were as follows: “Was there any periods when you rejoiced, and any periods when you thought you do not look good or you’re not smart like other children?” This seems stupid? Here are the results: as many as 8 million children in the U.S. legally take pills that alter their consciousness. In 2004, Ritalin – a drug for ADHD – was prescribed even 20 times more often than in 1995. Another cure for the disorder, Strattera, has an interesting advertising slogan: “A day under control, from getting up to going to bed!” The active ingredient in this medicine, as well as in Prozac, suppresses the storage of neurotransmitter serotonin in the brain.
Swedish journalist Janne Larson published unpublished discussion documents from regulatory agency for drugs, in which 130 suicide attempts were recorded in just 30 days after treatment with Strattera, and also 20 suicides is mentioned. She considers antidepressants in children a major cause of aggressive turns out (the mass murders in schools), especially in American children, where is the source of the pharmaceutical industry, which then spreads to the rest of the world.
When it comes to doctors, who often go to “educational seminars” of pharmaceutical companies, most of them are not aware that they are being manipulated, and because of their severe egos it is not likely that they will listen to someone without a medical degree. On the other hand, pharmacists finance the most of medical schools, so the impact on future doctors is in advance secured. The only hope is the awakening of human consciousness. Virapen starts by asking the question: has the pill ever cure anybody?
John Virapen was born 67 years ago in British Guiana. During his lifetime, he has traveled all around the world, and in recent years he is living a quiet life in southern Germany with a third wife and son. After publishing the book, he received, he says, a series of threats. They tried to poison him two times. He claims that pharmacists that were in court proved guilty of cheating should receive a prison sentence, rather than, as it is the practice now, only paying fines. In the end, what is one million U.S. dollars for damages in comparison to a billion dollars of earnings? The book mentions a statement by Sidney Taue, one of the leaders of Eli Lilly & Company, who once said that drugs have no effect on 50 percent of users. And one more thing. Guess what Swedish psychiatrist Forsman who took bribes for Prozac and publicly acknowledged it is working now. He is, as Virapen says, a court psychiatrist. He avoided the trial because of a loophole in the law. He was, he adds, an independent expert, and to be tried, he had to be a civil servant.
