Implantation of intraocular contact lens under the cornea may be safer alternative to laser surgery intended for a moderate myopic people, according to a British study …
Laser surgery – LASIK – is standard operating procedure designed for myopic people who do not want to depend on glasses or contact lenses. This procedure, with the help of laser rays, removes corneal tissue to change its curvature and thus achieve the best visual acuity.
However, in exceptional myopic individuals laser surgery is not practical because it is necessary to remove too much corneal tissue. Doctors may, instead, choose to insert a plastic lens in front of the natural lens of the eye.
However, so far no one has systematically reviewed the usefulness of such intraocular lenses compared to laser surgery.
However, new results show that the intraocular lenses – which cost between 3000 and 5000 U.S. dollars (more than twice as laser surgery) – can have many advantages compared to laser surgery.
“Laser surgery is becoming less predictable and less secure for a very shortsighted people. Today there is evidence showing that the intraocular lenses are safer than laser surgery in patients with moderate and high myopia,” said a British ophthalmologist Dr Allon Barsam.
Although additional researches that will explore the possible long-term risk or usefulness of intraocular lens are needed, the researchers conclude that their implantation should be considered in less serious cases of myopia.
