Mediterranean Plant Miraculously Protects Eyes

Results of the latest U.S. research showed that rosemary contains numerous antioxidants. One of them is carnosic acid, which seems to be good for eye health…

Scientists of the American Institute for Medical Research Sanford-Burnham found that carnosic acid, which can be found in rosemary, protects from the degeneration of the cornea, the light -induced retinal damages and age-related macular degeneration. The results were published in the journal Investigative Ophthalmology & Visual Science.

The macular degeneration is an altered state of the macula, which develops as a result of degenerative changes caused by aging. In developed countries senile macular degeneration is the most common cause of legal blindness.

The aforementioned condition that results in blurred vision and often in blindness has many hidden causes. Although previous studies have shown that the disease can be slowed down by certain compounds which fight against free radicals, the most recent study found that carnosic acid can fight against damages of the eye, but also damages in the brain which are caused by free radicals.
