Obese Women Less Likely To Suffer from Glaucoma

Elderly ladies with overweight are at lower risk of developing glaucoma, a potentially blinding eye disease. It was shown in the results of recent Dutch study…

Researchers are due to 10-year observation of almost 4000 elderly Dutch people found that overweight women have a lower probability for the diagnosis of primary open angle glaucoma.

Open-angle glaucoma (glaucoma simplex) is the most common form of this eye disease.
It develops slowly, with no symptoms, in both eyes, destroying peripheral vision. It is probably genetic. It occurs when the accumulated fluid increases the pressure in the eye, damaging the optic nerve that runs from the eye to the brain.
Although it sounds really incredible, new results show that “extra” fat, thanks to increased levels of estrogen, still protect women from the development of glaucoma.

The research results were published in the journal Archives of Ophthalmology.
