Vision Express has announced it is to re-stock monocles in its London Oxford Street store due to an unexpected surge in demand for the popular 19th century accessory..
The chain will be selling the eyepieces from 50 pounds, hoping that fashionistas will use their retro-eyewear to make a statement. Bryan Magrath, CEO of Vision Express said: “To our surprise we’ve had dozens of requests from customers in the last few months, so we thought we’d bring back the monocle on a trial basis. We’re as puzzled as anyone by the interest. I guess it’s one of those inexplicable fashion things.”
The re-introduction of the monocle comes after a surge in sales of plain glass spectacles as fashionable youngsters go for the ‘geek look,’ even old ‘NHS-style’ glasses have come into vogue with celebrities such as Radio 1’s Fearne Cotton seen sporting a pair.
