Ray-Ban is a brand of sunglasses and eyeglasses. It was founded by an American company Bausch & Lomb in 1937…
The brand is best known for its Wayfarer and Aviator sunglasses. History of Ray Ban Aviator dates from 1930. Since the new planes began to fly more often and farther, many American military pilots have reported that the glare from the sun causes them a headache and nausea. The main colonel had then contacted Bausch & Lomb (Rochester), the New York’s most powerful manufacturer of medical equipment, with a request to create sunglasses for aviators. Glasses that will be made for professional pilots were supposed to protect them from intense light and of great reflection of the sky.
The prototype was created in 1936 and is known as “anti-glare”; it had plastic frames and green lenses that eliminate glare, without clouding the vision. In the following year, they were redesigned with a metal frame called Ray-Ban Aviator and on May, 7th 1937, the product was patented. Ray Ban Aviator by Bausch & Lomb are something completely different. They are characterized by a well-known green shadow and are known as G-15 lenses. The frame is made of stainless steel, lenses are made from polished glass and decorated with crystals. What makes them distinctive in the world is the B & L signature placed in the right corner of glasses – Made In The USA by B & L Ray Ban.

1952 created another classic, Ray Ban Wayfarer, this time with plastic frames. It soon became popular in Hollywood, and it can be seen on James Dean in “Rebel Without a Cause” from 1955.
Peter Fonda wore them in the film “Easy Rider” in 1969.
In 1968 Ray-Ban launched a model Balorama, worn by Harry Callahan in the 1973 movie “Magnum Force”. The brand remained popular during the 60’s and 70’s, and has increased in popularity in the 80’s thanks to the films “The Blues Brothers” (1980), “Risky Business” (1983) and “Top Gun” (1986).
Now a standard lens G-15 in green gray color, was first introduced in 1953.
In 1999 Bausch & Lomb sold the brand to the Italian Luxottica Group for 640 million dolara. In order to compete with other manufacturers, Ray-Ban launched a series of innovative and elegant appearance models, such as Predators, Inertia, Prophecy, Gatsby, Sidestreet and Cutters.
