Many people believe that reading and excessive use of computers and television may be the cause of poor vision, but recent research shows that lack of sun exposure can contribute to this problem …
In research conducted at the Australian Centre for the vision (“Australian Research Council Centre of Excellence in Vision Science”) a vision of six-year-old Singapores and Australians originating from China was compared.
They found that 3% of Australian Chinese need glasses, compared with 30% of children from Singapore.
All children spent about the same time reading, watching television and playing computer games.
However, children from Singapore spent an average of 30 minutes a day outside the home, while the small Chinese from Australia spent an average of two hours a day outside the home.
One of the researchers, Professor Ian Morgan, commented: “This clearly indicates that the development of myopia is prompted by something from the environment rather than genetic.”
“It seems that the critical factor is the fact that children in Singapore spend a lot less time outdoors,” he concluded at the end.
