Sunglasses for Spring / Summer 2011

Discover the sunglasses trends for the upcoming warmer days…

Sunglasses are usually chosen according to different principles. One of the most important principles is certainly the face shape, followed by the principle of style that will complement the outfit which we currently wear. For the upcoming warmer days you can always choose the already proven conventional models of glasses, but if you want to be more special and fashion-conscious here is a short list of eyewear trends for the Spring / Summer of 2011 that are recommend by the world’s most respected designers…

Cat’s eye sunglasses

This spring cat-eye shaped frames give us the opportunity to travel back in the fifties and sixties when these glasses were a must have, and which were immortalized by the diva Audrey Hepburn in the movie Breakfast at Tiffany’s. Knowing how to “wear” these glasses is not easy, but if you follow the basic tricks you’ll definitely find the best way to complement your outfit.

These glasses are usually best suited to square-shaped and heart-shaped faces. These frames can come in many variations, but the most popular ones are: a very prominent glasses (sloping upward) which we can see at Dior, or soft and discreet glasses which can be seen at for example Giles, Paul Smith and Tommy Hilfiger.

Round frames

Known also as ‘Lennon glasses’, these round shaped sunglasses are definitely the next big trend after the cat-eye shaped glasses. Frames can be totally thin and metal, or wide and plastic. This trend of sunglasses began last fall, and is continuing this season – as it can be seen in Cacharela, Armani, Prada and Proenza Schouler. The color of glass can range from light to dark brown, and can be even painted in pink and blue. Round frames best suit people with square faces because curved lines help to alleviate the sharp facial features. People with an oval shape of the face can wear any kind of frames, but in the case of a round shape there should be a little wider framework. People with round faces should avoid this kind of frame because it will only widen their face.

Retro Frames

Large frames were worn in the last few seasons and are continuing to be worn in this season also. The inspiration for these retro glasses is the fifties, sixties and seventies. The frames are colorful, checkered, dotted or good old plain in conservative colors. All this we could see on the catwalk at D & G, Dsquared2 and Stella McCartney. These frames cover nearly a third of the face of the wearer and offer great protection from the sun; therefore, they are perfect for people with sensitive skin. As far as the facial shape concerns, standard rule applies – the rounder the face, the harsher rectangular frames should be worn, and for an oval, square or heart-shaped faces – rounder frames.
