The so-called cosmetic contact lenses that give the appearance of large “brown” eyes are more widespread and potentially dangerous trend among young people, the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) warned in an official statement…
“Circular” lenses for the seemingly larger and more expressive eyes are especially popular since a pop singer Lady Gaga wore them in the video for the song Bad Romance, reports The New York Times, which says that teenage girls have even 20 pairs of these lenses.
Selling “cosmetic” lenses without receit in the United States is prohibited by law, but they can be purchased over the internet, which can be extremely dangerous because they are not prescribed by a medical expert. Due to improper use of cosmetic lenses it is possible to develop inflammation, pain and visual impairment that can even lead to complete blindness, warns the American Academy of Ophthalmology.
