On the occasion of the International White Cane Safety Day, Foundation “I hear, I believe, I see” presented the Bible in the Daisy (Digital Accessible Information System) format…
Daisy format allows blind people to search for books in the same way as people who can see.
With the help of the “digital sound image” blind people can search for books by sections, chapters, titles, pages, sentences and verses as the smallest unit, said Mirko Hrkač, director of the Foundation “I hear, I believe, I see.”
The Bible in this format is scanned by using devices, supplies worth about three thousand Kuna, that was donated to blind people by the Croatian Health Insurance Association through the Association of the Blind, which is dedicated exclusively to the blind and will not be commercialized, noted Hrkač.
The Foundation is funded from the sale of audio publications and donations, but is regularly applied at various competitions, and given the inadequacy of resources, it is questionable whether this year, given the high price of the stand, will be able to participate in the “Interliber”.
Noting that all the ways to customize the printed book for blind people, by recording the sound track to digitizing, are very expensive, Hrkač on the occasion of promoting Croatian Bible had asked the publishers to add an audio CD to published books, so that blind people are able to buy books in bookstores, like everybody else.
The Bible in the Daisy format is an adapted audio Bible recorded in MP3 format, which was published by the Foundation in 2008. It has eleven albums, and contains the same division as the print edition of the Jerusalem Bible. Besides the Bible, the Foundation also published a book “Light of the World in Daisy format, on the occasion of pastoral visit of Pope Benedict XVI to Croatia.”
The aim of the Foundation “I hear, I believe, I see” is to help young people with disabilities in training and education, and blind people to obtain books that are not available at the Library for the Blind, regardless of the topic. Any blind person who wants to have the Bible in the new format may contact the Foundation by e-mail zakladacvv@gmail.com or phone 01/5602654 .
International White Cane Safety Day is celebrated on 15th October and on this day the public is acquainted with the problems of blind people.
