Google has partnered with a Swiss pharmaceutical company Novartis to work on the development of smart lenses presented in January…
Google’s smart contact lenses are a step closer to reality. The U.S. company informed the public about partnering with the Swiss pharmaceutical company Novartis to work on the development of these lenses, according to the Independent.
The lenses were first discovered in January this year. Sensors placed between two soft layers are used to measure glucose levels in tears of the person wearing them, and then transmit this information wirelessly to smart phones.
Google hopes that the technology will help people with diabetes around the world in a way that they will not need painful and regular blood tests anymore.
The Novartis hopes that the technology will also be adapted to help people who suffer from vision loss due to advanced age. They hope that the combination of Google’s expertise in miniature technology and their production resources will allow the creation of a contact lens that can help restore the natural autofocus on nearby objects.
Novartis wants to develop technology that offers another option for those who regularly wear contact lenses and glasses – intraocular lenses, i.e. lenses permanently inserted into the eye to correct vision.
Smart contact lenses were developed by Google X research lab, known also for the development of Google goggles.
“Our dream is to use the latest technology in miniaturization of electronics to assist in improving the quality of life for millions of people. We are very excited to work with Novartis to make this dream come true, “said the Google co-founder Sergey Brin.
