A pensioner Denis Duthie decided to toast the 50th anniversary of his parents’ marriage with a glass of vodka. When he returned home, he realized that he cannot see. Doctors managed to save his sight with whiskey!
It is not new that too much alcohol can cause blindness, but it is the first time that we hear alcohol is responsible for restoring vision.

As much as incredible as it sounds, a 65-year old New Zealander Denis Duthie went out with his parents to celebrate their golden wedding anniversary and then lost his sight due to a couple of glasses of vodka. In fact, his body had a bad reaction to a combination of medications for diabetes and vodka.

Duthie realized that he no longer sees when he returned home. He hoped to be able to see again when he gets some sleep, but when that did not happen he called the hospital.

Doctors intended to operate on him and the whole situation looked very serious. While Duthie’s wife waited in front of the operating room, one of the doctors thought that maybe this was formaldehyde poisoning, which is treated by giving ethanol – which is usually the ingredient of whiskey!

The hospital at that time did not have a supply of ethanol, so they bought a bottle of whiskey in a nearby store. By injecting alcohol directly into the stomach doctors restore Duthie’s sight and spared him of unnecessary surgery.
